Allan Hanbury

Allan Hanbury is Senior Scientific Officer at the Information Retrieval Facility (IRF), Vienna, Austria, and Adjunct Professor in the Institute of Computer Aided Automation, Vienna University of Technology, Austria. He is author or co-author of over 50 publications presented in refereed journals and international conferences. He was leader of the Evaluation, Integration and Standards work package of the MUSCLE EU Network of Excellence, and has lead of a number of Austrian national projects. He was born in George, South Africa in 1974. He was awarded the B.Sc. degree in physics and applied mathematics in 1994, the B.Sc. (Hons) degree in physics in 1995, and the M.Sc. degree in physics in 1999, all from the University of Cape Town, South Africa. He was awarded the Ph.D. degree in Mathematical Morphology in 2002 from the Paris School of Mines, France, and the Habilitation in Practical Informatics from the Vienna University of Technology in 2008.

This network focused on the automated extraction of semantic information from multimedia data. I was workpackage leader of the Evaluation, Integration and Standards workpackage and member of the steering committee.

1998–2000 SCANMATCH: EU project No. BES2-5314, IMT/SMT programme. In this project, we successfully developed an automated system for classifying and matching wood based on its colour and texture characteristics.

2002 Graph pyramids: Austrian Science Foundation (FWF) project P14445-MAT. This project aimed at the application of methods from combinatorial optimization to a model based building and rebuilding of graph pyramids.

2002 Geograph: Austrian Science Foundation (FWF) project P14662-INF. This project aimed at developing methods for the use of graphs in geoinformatics.

Interests: Information Retrieval, multi-modal Information Retrieval, evaluation of Information Retrieval, colour and texture image analysis, image segmentation, mathematical morphology, computer vision, medical and industrial applications of image analysis.
