The Working Groups

The symposium wound up in eight interdisciplinary working groups set up to discuss specific problems and potential methods of resolution.

Furthermore, these working groups will ensure a continuous dialogue and a sustainable development process beyond the IRFS. These teams, consisting of IR and IP experts, will cooperate on their chosen tasks and present their approaches and solutions at the IRFS2008.

  1. How can we help searchers to formulate better queries?
  2. What are the shortcomings of current search tools which could be overcome using proven techniques from IR?
  3. Which search instruments (in the near future) could form an alternative for the existing search tool?
  4. What are the shortcomings of deduplicating and relevance checking tools which could be overcome using proven techniques from IR?
  5. How can we generate real or realistic queries and relevance judged search result sets as IR test collections?
  6. Joint development of patent search use cases; what are the restrictions and opportunities?
  7. How to deal with human or OCR-generated data errors?
  8. How to search non-text information in patents?
  9. How are languages interfering with search, understanding and comparison of patents?
  10. How can classification and reclassification of (multi-lingual) patents into IPC categories be optimized?
