The scholarship for 2010 - 2013 has been granted to Parvaz Mahdabi.
The IRF grants a number of student scholarships. Besides supporting a local student in close cooperation with the Vienna University of Technology (Linda Andersson), a call for applications was issued at the beginning of September 2009 and disseminated through various offline and online channels in the IR community. The studentship covers tuition fees, a stipend to cover basic living expenses, use of the high performance computing facilities at the IRF, and other necessary equipment and travel expenses. The awards may be held at any institution approved to award Ph.D. or equivalent degrees. The sponsorship should lead to the award of a doctorate within the normal period of time for the host institution.
Successful applicants are selected on the basis of:
- Scientific quality of the proposal
- Match with the scientific goals of the IRF
- Academic merit of the applicant
- Suitability and qualification of the proposed supervision team
Successful applicants are expected to spend at least three months at the IRF in Vienna as part of their studies. They are required to present a paper on their work at the annual IRF Conference and to note the sponsorship of the IRF on all publications during the period of sponsorship. The award is granted for four years, subject to satisfactory progress.
Out of 9 applications that were received and evaluated, the jury (Arcot Desai Narasimhalu, Yves Chiaramella, Norbert Fuhr and John Tait) decided for Parvaz Mahdabi, who has a strong background in artificial intelligence and machine learning. After graduating from the University of Tarbiat Modares (Tehran, Iran), she is currently working in the IR group at the Faculty of Informatics (University of Lugano, Switzerland), where she is developing her PhD project.
