Information Retrieval (IR) is the science of searching for documents and for information within documents

The IRF is an independent non-profit research institute founded by internationally renowned information retrieval scientists with the mission to facilitate large scale information retrieval research and foster knowledge transfer between academia and industry.

 Message from the Board

As a not-for-profit research organization, the IRF is dependent on funding from industry and the public hand to fulfill its scientific mission. As the necessary funds could not be secured, the activities of the IRF Society will be slowed down as of 1 May 2011. The IRF will continue to offer access to the MAREC data collection to its members. The IRF does not accept new Scientific Memberships anymore. The larger EU-funded projects together with the scientific team have been taken over by the Vienna University of Technology.
